It is definitely no surprise that I love to photograph newborns. I love everything about them- from their squishy lips, to their kissable cheeks! I usually book 6-7 months in advance for newborn sessions. I do leave room in my schedule for last minute bookers-but it is better to be safe than sorry! A newborn session is booked by your due date, and the actual session takes place within 10 days after the baby is born. Clients then add me to their list of contacts to call while in the hospital and we book a date then. I have worked with hundreds of newborns and have a special connection with them. I take pride in being called "the baby whisperer" by clients and friends alike! I look forward to working with your precious little bundle!
Newborn FAQs
When should I book if I want newborn photos?
Early! The sooner you book, you will be guaranteed the date! So if you are pregnant, then its is time to book! I only will do one newborn per day; that way nothing is rushed. If you know you are having a c-section we can book an exact day in advance. If not, let me know when you are due, and we will go from there. If the big day is fast approaching and it looks like Baby will be late or early, just let me know. That way we can make sure I have a time open. Feel FREE to email or call me when you are still in the hospital, so I can know that Baby was born and can plan a set date. It is highly important to get them in the 10 day window.
With that said, when should my newborn be photographed?
The first days of a newborn are filled with awe and wonder! I like to capture that newness! So, a newborn is BEST photographed in the first 10 days of life. I prefer days 5-9. That way Baby will be sleepy and moldable. I can get the sleeping and peaceful shots very easily that way, too. Baby is more alert 13 days and up, and baby acne and colic are common after that age as well.
What time do you being newborn sessions?
I begin newborn sessions at 11 am.
Where should it be and how long will it last?
I offer newborn sessions in my studio, or at your home. I would recommend coming to me because my studio has wonderful light, good heating and I have everything at hand. I cannot bring everything with me to your home; but it is all available at my studio. On average, it takes 3-4 hours. I have plenty of patience, and I don’t mind coaxing Baby into a position for 20 minutes if need be! But don’t worry. It is a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere. I schedule my day around newborn sessions. The finished product will be well worth it!
How do I prepare for your arrival? (for clients not coming to my studio)
A full tummy ensures a happy and sleepy baby. Sleeping babies are so fun! They let me move them and curl them and pose them; all while sleeping. This is a result of a full tummy. I prefer you to start feeding Baby either 5 minutes before I get there, or when I get there. That will give me time to set up and get everything situated. About one hour before I arrive, make sure the house is warm, as we will be taking a lot of no clothing pictures, and Baby must be warm. So prepare to be warm! Also, loosen diaper, and clothing. This will save me a LOT of time in editing so I don’t have to remove all the red marks. Now remember, by the time I come, you will already be on a schedule. We may have to tweak it a bit; more feeding, more sleeping, and such. Your baby is my boss-we go around them! Keeping Baby happy will, again, will ensure the best pictures!
What should my baby wear?
I photograph newborns in their birthday suit.
And me?
Something comfortable. For the parent and baby shots, I would recommend wearing a black, white, or dressy shirt (no logos, etc) and jeans. I may not even get a full body shot. If you come to my studio, dress in layers, it will be very hot!
What if I want pictures with a hat my mom made, or his first blanket?
Of course!! I would love to capture your precious one with anything that has a special spot in your heart. I am always looking for new ideas and poses, so if you have any ideas, let me know in advance! That way I can have time to think into it more, so we can get creative pictures!
Anything else you want to tell me?
As mentioned before, diapers will be used as a bare necessity. We need a quiet, calm, and relaxed atmosphere. So please, if possible, no aunts, cousins, grandparents, and even toddler siblings around unless they are quiet. I would rather Baby wake up from hunger and be fed than a well intentioned relative talking loudly. To get most of the poses I do, babies must be sleeping. I work best in quiet, non-distracting atmospheres.
Kris Kalaf - My daughter, Jessica, was just married on 10/10/10. Then, two weeks later she discovered she is pregnant. Her due date is, tentatively, 6/28/11.
I would very much like to find out more information about booking you for the babies first photos. Please let me know the procedure>
Thanks,
Kris
